Section R315.3 of the International Residential Code, 2012 Edition, Where required in existing dwellings, is hereby amended to read as follows:

R315.3 Where required in existing dwellings.

Where work requiring a permit occurs in existing dwellings that have attached garages or in existing dwellings within which fuel-fired appliances exist, carbon monoxide alarms shall be provided in accordance with Section R315.1

Exception: Work involving only exterior items such as roofs, siding, windows, decks, etc., are exempt from the requirements of this section. Fairway, KS Muni. Code § 15-880.

Existing buildings, meaning buildings that were built in accordance to code at the time of construction, typically merit extra consideration in a current updated code.
